Do you want to find a purebred cat?
For some of us, a common tom cat or garden is not enough. We want a high quality feline company with a pedigree and the only way to guarantee that a cat is a thoroughbred is to contact one of the national cat associations or similar organizations in other countries.
To find a purebred cat, you can start with the Cat Fanciers Association. The CFA was created to maintain breed standards and record litters as purebred. The association also organizes feline exhibitions and judges them according to their fidelity to the standards. They recognize only 41 breeds of cats.
The breeder records a litter of kittens with the Cat Fancier's Association. Then they have the opportunity to decide whether or not to allow the kitten to be raised. Only cats with an identification number on their registration form will be able to register their kittens. This allows the breeders to continue to improve their breeds. Once the litter has been recorded, each kitten will have to be individually registered by its new owner.
There are three categories of recognized cats. They are the class of championship, the provisional class, and the diverse class. Each breed selected by the FCA is part of one of these groups. They must win the first place in their race and then their class before being able to compete for the title of best show.
Championship class are cats that are established breeds of cat. Breeds of the provisional category have been established more recently. They are always monitored to make sure they comply with the new breed standard. Finally, the only race currently in the Divers class has always created a breed standard and can not really compete for the best in the show's title.
In Canada, you can register your cat in the Canadian Cat Association. This association was formed by Canadians who did not want to register their cats with an association in another country. There are other popular cat registries, such as the Association of Traditional Cats, which supports the original breed standards and does not confirm current trends that exaggerate the characteristics of the breed, the Council of Kingdom Cats. United and the International Federation Fý½line, which is the European register of cats.
All cats fall into one of two categories. They are either short hair or long hair. Short hairs are breeds like Abyssinian and British Shorthair. Long-haired pearls include Turkish angora and Norwegian forest cats. The most popular of these is the American Shorthair who has been to the United States for over 300 years. They have been carefully raised for generations to develop features that would appear in every born kitten. Others include Siamese, Rex, Principal Coon, Ragdoll and Persian.
Choosing a cat with a pedigree allows you to choose a cat that has the features you want to have. They are not more affectionate than other cats, but they can be a favorite possession no matter what.
